Taking place toward the end of World War II in Japan, the film tells the tale of the relationship between two orphaned children: 14-year-old Seita and his young 4-year-old sister Setsuko. After their mother is killed during an air raid in Kobe, Japan, Seita and Setsuko struggle to survive, facing hunger, loss, and the harsh realities of war.
